Dream

Jin wakes up from a nightmare of a traffic accident on the way to his ex-girlfriend’s home. The dream drives him to the very spot and stumbles upon an aftermath of an accident which unfolded in the same way as his dream. The police track down the assailant and and Jin follows them to the suspect’s home and meets a woman named Ran. She denies the hit and run accusation since she was asleep the entire night. Jin explains his dream to the police and asks to be charged instead. The police dismiss him as a nut and arrest Ran. Jin is wholly convinced that there’s an unexplainable connection between him and Ran. He soon discovers that when he dreams, Ran unconsciously acts out his dream while sleepwalking … Essentially, the two become one.

What will you do if you find out that someone you know is in love with a doll?

Lars and the real girl is a story about Lars who used to live a solitude life but then one day he invited Bianca, an anatomically correct molded sex doll, to his house and treat her like his real girlfriend. Gus and Karin, Lars’s brother and sister-in-law, find themselves in a difficult situation so they  took Lars and Bianca to the doctor and the doctor suggested them to go along with Lars that is to treat Bianca as a real woman. The story goes on as everyone in the town also go along with this idea to help Lars.

While the film may seem very optimistic, Lars has a good family along with the town peoples to support him, but because of this attitude portray in the film that has really help Lars  from the delusion and, in a way, help him grown up. However, I can’t help but wonder if in the real world people will react to this situation cautiously especially in Thailand today where people are so disconnected and self-centered. Maybe that’s why the problem in Thailand had never been solve properly. I can only hope that we are to be more like Gus who doesn’t blame other but himself for his brother symptom or more like Karin who commit herself wholeheartedly to help Lars then maybe next time we can solve our delusion more wisely.

Anyway, with very well written script and great performance from all the actors especially Ryan Gosling (as Lars) and Emily Mortimer (as Karin) this is another pleasant film to watch.
